Rhythm in the Spin

Rhythm in the Spin is a body of work comprising Spinning Painting Series (Set of 6), Swirling Release (triptych) and Interplay video. The project was developed through a process-based approach that combines intention and unpredictability, where both the artist and the materials influence the outcome and meaning of each piece. The interplay between the artist’s gestures and chosen materials- watercolours, botanical inks, East Asian Xuan papers and traditional watercolour paper find rhythm through spinning motion. Through this methodology, the artist seeks to articulate the indescribable chaos of overstimulation, feeling and thinking everything, all the time, all at once. Collectively, the works reflect a unification, through persistent cycles where even chaos can be compelled to fall into rhythm.

The process for each set in the Spinning Painting Series involved layering three sheets of Xuan paper on a lazy Susan turntable (which provided a constant spinning motion) and a sheet of watercolour paper placed beneath to catch splashes of pigment.

The triptych artwork Swirling Release was created from a reinterpretation of the spinning element of the previous methodology, a process developed incorporating dynamic movement between artist and materials, by having the artist engage from within the creative space. Standing on a circular board centred on three long sheets of Xuan paper placed on the floor, the artist acts as the turntable, throwing wax and paint while spinning at the centre of the artwork.
